Knitting and Crochet

Hi! My name is Laura and I am just one part of the dream team that is Bumps & All.

I am as you all know, a mum and a nana, I have been knitting since the young age of 7, over the years I have and I still continue to make hand knitted items for babies and children, I love the satisfaction I get from seeing a baby or an older child in one of my pieces, as there is nothing better than seeing a baby or an older child in hand knits, they look so smart.

A few years ago I decided that I was going to teach myself how to crochet and I have never looked back, crocheting gives me the same satisfaction as knitting does. The upside to crocheting is that it is so much faster than knitting. Which now brings me on to the next part of my journey in Bumps.

Our group has several side chats on messenger and one of those is about crochet and knitting, some of our members are interested in learning both crochet and knitting which is amazing to hear, as I feel this is an invaluable skill that everyone would benefit from it, it is also therapeutic as well as helping your mental health.

The next part of our journey is where we are now with things. Our group members are looking at other possible activities and skills that they would like to acquire. Recently we were selected for a panel to come together with like minded people, wishing to make our communities better by asking "What matters to you?" At our first training session we got speaking to another two women who teach crochet and knitting. We spoke to them about their group, "Crochet Comforts", and it was then that Agnes and myself decided that we would visit their group to see what it was like. We enjoyed it so much so that we decided that we would recommend this group to our group members, rather than attempting to arrange something similar at Bumps. They are an established group and it made complete sense to recommend this group, where they could get more members and that new friendships could be forged and promote a sense of our communities coming together and supporting each other rather than competing against each other. Agnes and myself have spoken with another member of our team, Leigh, and we are taking her with us to the next session.

We will continue to work together, forging new bonds and bringing our communities together.

Laura Beedie.
